Coventry Police reported today (Aug. 21) that two people were killed this morning in a one-car crash on Route 44.
The accident was reported at 1:37 a.m., according to police, and occurred on Route 44 west of North River Road.
Police identified the victims of the crash as 25-year-old Jessica Clark of Brigham Tavern Road, Coventry and 20-year-old Walter Parsell of Timber Lane, Willington.
In the statement released by Coventry Police, they state, “We extend our sympathies to the families and friends of the victims of this tragic accident.”
Police say the vehicle, a 2000 Honda Civic, was being driven east on Route 44 when it left the road and struck a utility pole.
“One of the occupants of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The second occupant was transport by ambulance to Hartford Hospital and was later pronounced dead,” the release states.
The multi-town Metro Accident Investigation team was summoned to assist in the investigation. Members of the South Windsor, Glastonbury and Enfield Police Departments responded.
The North Coventry Fire Department responded with rescue vehicles as well as the CVFA ambulance, the release states.
CL&P crews also were on the scene to secure the heavily damaged utility pole. Power was cut in the immediate area while crews replaced the pole and Route 44 was temporarily closed.
While the accident remains under investigation, police state, “due to the extreme damage to the vehicle, and other evidence at the scene, it appears that the speed of the vehicle was a contributing factor in the accident.”
As of this posting, investigators have not determined who was driving the car.
